This novel takes place almost entirely in New Orleans, a city I have known since childhood. The exotic, alluring nature of the city furnishes the theme of the book: it exerts a curious fascination, suggestive of dark doings, evil situations, a Byzantine labyrinth of cause and effect. What could happen here? easily becomes What could not happen here? The central character is a young woman, Julia Garrett, drawn from childhood into the snare of the city. As she grows older and tries to adjust to a socially acceptable life style, she finds it offers her no satisfaction and that her basic desire is to turn to the citys dark side as a life source. This is the major theme and conflict and is worked out throughout her life through a number of the men she attracts or is drawn to. One after another, they become enmeshed with her in an increasingly dangerous life style, with consequences that are both lurid and, at last, liberating. It is now in print with the University Press of Mississippi with an introduction by Peggy Prenshaw. |
