In 1956 I was visiting John Rusher’s
family in Cornwall for the first time. Since
we were planning to marry anyway, his parents
thought we should do it there. It was Michelmas
(September 29), his father pointed out; therefore,
the church was decorated already. So it was. After
two weeks of grey skies, wind and rain, the sun that
day came out beautifully. This photo was made in the
Rushers’ garden after the ceremony. The day was so
warm, we heard later that John’s sister went swimming
in the sea, while we took the train for Salisbury,
then London, Paris and eventually Rome.
